These marbled plates are such a delight to make and such a long process to get there. I stain the porcelain several different colors with mason stains and slips then lightly wedge them together with traces of stoneware in cup-sized amounts and leave them for a week so the clays can acclimate to the same moisture level . Then I cut off thin marbled slices of them and roll them into flat slabs of clay to design the plates. After they’ve dried slowly I scrape the surface of the piece to reveal the swirling, unpredictable patterns.
